Biography

The Mayor and Mayoress

Councillor Alex Crawford was Mayor of Rushmoor in 2011/2012.

Councillor Alex Crawford has most recently been a member of the Council since 2009, when he was elected to represent Heron Wood Ward, Aldershot, in a by-election, having previously represented Mayfield Ward, Farnborough, between 1976 and 1985.

Born in Paisley, Scotland, in 1944, Alex was convinced of the essential role of public service by enthusiastic teacher of economics and public affairs at Queen Mary’s School, Basingstoke, in 1961.

After graduating with a BSc (Special) in Physics from Imperial College, London, in 1966, Alex started his career in scientific and technical publishing. He is currently a writer and editor on science, including as Staff Editor of Trends in Analytical Chemistry.

Alex’s first community involvement in Rushmoor was in 1974, when he was Founder Secretary of the Rushmoor Consumer Group. He later became Chairman of the National Federation of Consumer Groups.

In 1976, Alex was appointed to serve as a member of the Southern Electricity Consultative Committee, and, in 1977, to serve as a member of the National Consumer Council.

Since 2002, Alex has been a Justice of the Peace on the North East Hampshire Bench of Magistrates, on which he has been a Chairman since 2007. Also, since 2002, Alex has been a General Adviser at Aldershot Citizens Advice Bureau, and currently specialises in helping clients with employment issues. He has also served as a Board member of Pavilion Housing Association (now part of First Wessex Housing Association), and as a Governor of Frimley Park Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

Alex’s wife, Jennifer Evans, is a retired university lecturer, now “busy doing nothing (!)”, including being a Governor at Heath End School, Secretary of the Aldershot & District Allotments Association, Secretary of the Cargate Area Residents Association, a General Adviser at Aldershot Citizens Advice Bureau, specialising in social policy, and caring for grandchildren.

Jennifer and Alex enjoy walking holidays, swimming and playing Scrabble.
